Apparantly the Chile earthquake was big enough to shorten our day by 1 microsecond lol as if thats news worthy! but still pretty amazing.

The length of a day is never exactly 24 hours anyway it's increasing extremely slowly all the time. We have to compensate for this with 'Leap Seconds' believe it or not.

how odd.
science and astronomics is pretty heavy lol
does the earth now float 1 mico second closer to the sun now? hehe
since time is now faster, by 1 micro second... lol
j/k
nacirema
03-03-2010, 08:06 PM
the next big earthquake will project us towards the sun at a rate of three inches a year!
w0000.
only 93 million miles to go!
lol.
KING ZOIDY
03-03-2010, 08:41 PM
does the earth now float 1 mico second closer to the sun now?
A second is not a measure of distance, jesus christ! And time does not change. The earth is just spinning 1 micro second fatser, which doesnt affect anything.
nacirema
03-03-2010, 08:43 PM
LOL.
zoidyzoidyzoidy.
do you think that the magnetic field switching has anything to do with this?
KING ZOIDY
03-03-2010, 08:45 PM
The magenetic field switch will happen withing the next 1000 years, as our Magnetic field strength has been decreasing. And records showed that the polarity switched every time the magnetic field begand to decline.

I couldnt care less, I'll be dead when it happens, not to mention we just gotta scribble out the "N" and replace it with a "S"

03-03-2010, 08:51 PM
ok, I was wrong, the earth is spinning faster, that's why the day is 1 micro second shorter.
I thought our axis was different and the year was shorter, my bad.
I wonder, how can an earth quack increase our rotation?
KING ZOIDY
03-03-2010, 08:52 PM
And earthquake cannot move the earth closer to the sun...
and the earthquake was powerful enough to tilt the eaths axis slightly, making it go faster (slightly)

it'd be alot cooler if that earthquake that's goin to take out california would just come already, lol.
KING ZOIDY

Here's how FOX News would describe this story: Today, the Chile earthquake has caused devastating damage, killing 60 billion people and has significantly altered Earth's axis which means days will be a lot shorter! Britney Spears was affected by this news and allegedly sold her house to buy and snort as much coke BEFORE THE WORLD ENDS!!! And now, on to weather...

I can't remeber from somewhere. Like oen teacher said. That their is a lot of earthquakes out in the desert in western australia and sometimes lite waves reach perth and break windows. I had a dream about that lol.

26-03-2010, 03:17 PM
You have earthquakes often in Australia?
Yoshirama
26-03-2010, 03:19 PM
no we don't. indonesia has them a lot though. we haven't had a bit one in many years.
SuicideBooth
26-03-2010, 03:20 PM
We haven't had one, pretty much ever... Obviously because of our climate, but pretty recently there was news about an earthquake here that was so dim that nobody even noticed it... How exciting. lol

Australia does experience earthquakes, but not as severely or as commonly as in say Japan, Iran or New Zealand. Meckering WA in 1968 and Newcastle NSW 1989 were two earthquakes which caused severe damage, and loss of life in the case of Newcastle, largely because Australian building codes generally do not take into account earthquakes because their frequency is so low. There were two minor earthquakes off Broome WA and in Gippsland Vic in March 2009.
Essentially, Australia is situated far from tectonic plate margins which are the "hotspots" for severe earthquakes. Stresses can develop away from plate margins, which is why the continent can experience relatively minor earthquakes.
Because Australia is centrally located on one of the shields of the earths crust. These are old solid parts of the earth's crust where there is no volcanic activity or movement so there is little in the way of seismic activity.
I copied and pasted that since i couldn't be bothered typing it out.
lol in bunbury(the place where i live) we haven't had one. that i know of.
