Here are some useful proofs. Try and spot the flaws (We did them in Maths today!) (0.9999... means 0.9 recurring i.e. the 9s go on to infinity! / means divided by, i is the square root of -1, ∞=infinity)

Proof that 0.999999...=1
C=0.9999...
10C=9.9999...
10C-C=9
9C=9
C=1
Therefore 0.9999...=1

Proof that 1=0
Assume a=0 and b=0
a+b=0
(a+b)/(a+b)=0/(a+b)
anything divided by itself=1 and 0 divided by anything=0
therefore 1=0

Proof that -1=1
-1/1=1/-1
√(-1/1)=√(1/-1)
√-1/√1=√1/√-1
i/1=1/i
(ixi)/1=1
-1/1=1
therefore -1=1

proof that 1=∞
1/0=∞
so 1=0x∞
anything x0=0
anything x∞=∞
so 1=0 or ∞
If we take the average of these values:
(0+∞)/2=∞
Therefore 1=∞

Proof that no numbers exist
1/0=∞ or -∞
so 1/∞=0
and1/-∞=0
so 1/∞=1/-∞
∞=-∞
If all numbers lie between ∞ and -∞ and ∞=-∞ then no numbers can exist!

Proof that women are evil!(I know I am a woman, but I find this funny!)
Assume that Money=√evil and Time=money
Women=timexmoney
Women=moneyx√evil
Women=√evilx√evil
Women=evil!

Yeah, I found it very useful! (Unfortunately all the proofs have flaws :( - Shame that! I would love to tell everyone that no numbers exist!!!)

This is A-level maths stuff, you don't get to do proofs before that! But it is easier when people actually explain it to you rather than just seeing it written down!

Yeah its logical...but you can use mathematics to prove almost anything. 0.99999 recurring is not equal to 1.0 no matter what you times/divide it by..Not really! Niether is 1 equal to infinity and so on.

I mean...people have used algebra and calculus to predict galaxies that wont exist for a million years...but how can they definitely know they will be there? its all theoretical mumbo jumbo!!

yeah, i mean the idea of math is very different than the application for sure, but supposedly, if you get all the variables right, you can predict the interactions of complex systems to a T.. i mean, watch the weather channel.. they're right sometimes..

I know that none of it actually works, but it's because it has flaws. I did not come up with any of the proofs, but I can tell you what all the flaws are if you really want!

The stuff above makes less sense to me when written out... but I'll give it a go...

Proof that 0.9 recurring equals 1
Let C equal 0.9 recurring.
Multiply C by 10 and you get 9.9 recurring
Take C away from this and you get 9.9 recurring minus 0.9 recurring
Meaning that nine times C equals 9
Divide this by 9 and you get C equals 1
Therefore 0.9 recurring equals 1

If that makes more sense to you, I'll do the others like that as well...
