Lisa's Sax - a top 10 episode for me in a season desperately trying to hold onto the classic era. *sigh*

Miracle on Evergreen Terrace

Someone recently mentioned that Miracle on Evergreen Terrace could be a nice bookend to the series. Ending the episode the way it was started: with a christmas-episode during the still generally well-received season 9.
Now, this christmas-tale may have the darkest humor (eg. the orphans) from all christmas-episodes.
Of course, "Marge Be Not Proud" had the most emotional weight and will always stay my favorite X-mas installment, but this one also knows how to hit the ball in the park.
And yes, Maggie wears her starshaped outfit again, no christmas without that clothing-piece.
Also worth mentioning, this episode contains one of the last stylish dream-sequences.
That minimal color-use aside from the blacks and the greys was already established in "Bart the Genius" and it was one of the characteristics from the classic Simpsons-era when it comes to their own rules of color-language.
Nowadays, it is not applied anymore.

^ Good evaluation on the episode.

Most favorite episode of that season is:

[a car pulls up]
Homer: For God sakes, my little girl is--
[the window rolls down, revealing Marge]
Agh! Hello!
Marge: Homer, what's going on, shouldn't you be at work?
Homer: I am at work.. this is what I do! Get moving Marge, this isn't a parking lot!
Marge: Sorry! [drives away]
-- Homer looking for Lisa, "Lost Our Lisa"

The Last Temptation of Krust was also hilarious for "eat your vegetables". The song at the end of Lisa's Sax was cool and overall, it was a Lisa-themed episode which is neat.

The song at the end of Lisa's Sax was cool because it was a Lisa-themed episode.

Oh yeah, Baker Street.

Season 9 is one of the most underrated seasons in The Simpsons history. Many of you will point-blank disagree with this statement and perhaps argue the opposite (that it is infact overrated). The fact is that many people feel that it is not a classic season or, if they believe that it is, then they feel it is a weak classic. I’d argue that it is a stone cold classic season. I’d argue that many of the episodes in season 9 are as heartfelt and well written as most of those in the preceding seasons. For example, Lisa’s Sax. One of the most beautiful and fantastic moments in the show was when Homer, after telling the story, decides to once again go without air conditioning. It’s that kind of down to earth emotion that made the Simpsons great and it’s certainly present here. I know that the sceptical among you will now be shouting ‘That’s not a Mike Scully episode!’ but here’s another example (this time show ran by Mike Scully)… Miracle on Evergreen Terrace. This is one of the most emotional and fantastic Christmas episodes with that dark ‘sucky things happen on Christmas too’ Simpsons edge. Bart battling with his conscience is brilliantly written and then the family having to live with the lie is also great. Then the ending is such an inspired one. The Simpsons battling over that washcloth is a great, poignant, sweet moment, which would have been a great note to end the series on. There’s also a great little jab at news corporations who benefit from people being screwed up fucktards…

Kent: In my long career, I've seen some pretty shabby things. But this putrid fraud out stinks them all.
Cameraman: And cut.
Kent: I just wanna thank you folks so much. This has turned out to be a really great story for me.

Season 9 has two of the most unfairly criticised episodes ever aswell. The Principal and the Pauper and All Singing, All Dancing. I simply do not understand people’s issue with P&P. Sure whatever, it takes a character you know well and then tells you that actually that’s all a lie but that’s what I love about it. It doesn’t ruin any of the Skinner episodes before or after it because it lives in its own little universe (like each the Simpsons episode). It doesn’t screw with continuity. It never says that all this stuff didn’t happen, its just saying that the guy who did wasn’t called Skinner. So what? I just think it’s a great little character twist, which doesn’t actually make a shred of difference to anything. You don’t like what it did with the character of Skinner? Ignore it but as a self-contained piece of TV then it’s great. It’s a funny, inventive episode, which is a comment on something changing and the change being hated immediately. Looks like a-lot of angry the Simpsons fans just proved that point, huh? The other main criticism of that episode is the ending. This is something I understand a bit more but still. It was amusing enough and it was in an episode, which didn’t take itself too seriously anyway. If it had been in a serious emotion filled one (adjusted to make sense obviously) such as Lisa’s Substitute then I would be raging but it’s in a silly little episode. I guess it’s kinda lazy but self consciously lazy and its poking fun at itself for it. It’s tongue in cheek. That’s fine if you don’t like it when things do that but it isn’t worth the amount of hate this episode receives. I’m in danger of this becoming a P&P rant so I’ll move onto All Singing, All Dancing. When I first heard about the hate for this episode I was literally gobsmacked. It’s a goddamn clip show, people! It also happens to be one of the most interesting ones. I prefer clip shows with a clear and fun theme like this one has. It’s amusing and pretty inventive. I much prefer it to pointless clips being loosely strung together. Also I’m a huge fan of musical numbers in the Simpsons so I love the majority of the clips. Really don’t understand the hate guys (please explain because this one gets more hate than most the other clip shows).

So season 9 has some fantastic episodes and some really underrated and harshly criticised ones. These reasons are why I think it’s actually underrated. I haven’t even mentioned the best five episodes so I will do now…
Das Bus – Hilarious crazy gag fest. It’s a bit out there but its still fantastic.
The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson – Again another great gag fest. A real strong point of season 9. Just a really great episode. If you don’t laugh during this then you’re made of stone.
Girly Edition – Another crazy episode but it has a great conscience trip for Lisa and is really well written and a great parody of the media.
Lisa the Simpson – A great heartfelt commentary on a little child’s insecurities about intelligence and family. Amazingly well written and true to life episode.
The Last Temptation of the Krust – Funny funny episode. Great satire on celebrities selling out. Cayonero advert is a highlight.

There are so many enjoyable episodes in season 9. Season 9 certainly has its own style. It's more gag based than previous seasons but still it has some very emotional and heartfelt moments and it still has that Simpsons cynical edge. Every era had its own style and this was season 9's. Humour was the priority but without forgetting emotion, darkness and a distaste for authority.

This Little Wiggy

I know I was excited the first time for a new Ralph-centred episode after 'I Love Lisa', but the exploration of Bart and Ralph seemed rather dull compared with the exploration of Lisa and Ralph in the mentioned S4-episode. We get an enjoyable setup in the museum and we get a disturbing ending with the Irish leprechaun and inbetween we get Ralph being the cliched spacecadet he became somewhere after season 4.
It was nice to see the endearing attitude from Wiggum towards his son though, totally accepting the way he is. (although he's not the smartest of the bunch either) And for some reason I always smile when he announces his arrival at home with "it's me, chief Wiggum". So for the rest... the scene at the toystore feels sincere and childlike and it is the feel-good moment of the episode. This makes watching the bullying afterwards a bit sad/almost painful. It's an eye-opener for Bart though. As much as he wants to be part of the gang... he ain't, he'll never be. It didn't work out in 'The Telltale Head' and yet again stealing something to impress the bullies only leaves him with more trouble. The violator who turned victim only wins over the casual audience and of course they're gonna cheer for him and Ralph when they decide to enter forbidden territory to retrieve the key. Although I'm sure Ralph's bravery is mostly ignorance and not a rise above his capacities as in 'I Love Lisa'.

So final thoughts... it's an episode directed more towards the kids' part of the Simpsons' audience and if you can accept that, you can have some enjoyment out of it.
