To me the Bourne film trilogy is the essential spy film series of this generation. It is what the Mission Impossible trilogy wished it could be, but I think fell far short of.
When Matt Damon was originally announced as the lead in the series, I thought he may not pull it off. Let's be honest, he hadn't really done any physically demanding roles of this magnitude before, although I was a fan of his acting. Well, goddamn did he prove me wrong. The boy kicked some ass and then some, and with such quickness and assuredness that it appeared flawless. Kudos to Damon and his trainers.
Beyond Damon's fantastic physical and dramatic performance, we also have the stunts and car chases. The chase scenes in all three films are perhaps the best I've seen in years, and although the shakycam has its detractors, I find it adds an urgency and intensity to the chase scenes.
The supporting cast was superb. First we have the always dependable Chris Cooper, then onto Brian Cox, who is a favourite character actor of mine and always ignites the screen, and my favourite actress working today, Joan Allen. In a largely male environment and workplace portrayed in the film, she commands the scenes and never was she not believable in his role. And let's not forget her co-star David Straithairn in Ultimatum, who seems to never get enough praise for his work.
I could go on and on, but thought I'd share my thoughts on this series, and see if there's anyone else out there who shares my love for this trilogy.
The Bourne Identity 8/10
The Bourne Supremacy 9/10
The Bourne Ultimatum 9.5/10
