The Irish Football Association is expected to confirm the appointment of Nigel Worthington as Northern Ireland manager within the next few days.
A period of prolonged negotiation is likely to conclude with Worthington agreeing a two-year contract.

This would see him take charge for the forthcoming World Cup 2010 qualifiers.

The former Norwich City boss had guided Northern Ireland to two wins, a draw and three defeats in the final games of the recent Euro 2008 qualifying series.

This secured a creditable third place finish in a group which saw Sweden and Spain progress.

Lawrie Sanchez had taken charge for the first half of the campaign before leaving to manage Fulham.

Northern Ireland have been drawn in the same World Cup group as the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and San Marino.

A meeting to discuss the fixture schedule for the qualifying series is scheduled to take place on 15 January.
