I have read 22 Wells books (I will gladly list them should you wish) including WOTW. I have seen the Jeff Wayne version live at Hallam Arena, Sheffield. I HATE this movie. The tripods are nice, but the poor acting lets it down. Plus that damn ending! Why do the military have to be there?! Damn you Spielburg!

No offense, but I couldn't stand that movie. It was visually impressive, but that's about it.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!
-Dakota Fanning's constant screaming earns the award for most annoying child acting ever
-The son runs into a giant explosion and magically appears at the end
-Somehow Tom Cruise's character is the only person on earth who knows how to fix a car
-Too slow for my taste
-Noone significant dies
-The aliens run around destroying things until a virus kills them...lame
-Tom Cruise (need I say more)
Just my opinion..

Good points but that was how the book went

Well, maybe it isn't the movies fault then (except for Dakota Fanning) , or maybe some of it just didn't translate to film well...maybe I'll give it a read sometime.

Whoa! I agree that it is visualy impressive but it is NOT how the book went. Okay, so it's a lot better than the first film (50s/60s?), but a lot of things were way off.
-No cylinders
-No Handling Machines
-No Thunderchild
-No Black Smoke
-Three characters (Ogilvy, The Artilleryman and the Priest) were rolled into one for no real reason
-The kids were added and irritate me (sorry, but if I had a Heat-Ray handy... WHOOSE! Bye-bye!)

No Black Smoke
What did that do?

wow a lot of discussion on this movie, My hubby loves it, I didn't really like it that much, maybe because of all the pre-movie hype. There were some good scenes, I liked the one with the ferry, but others seemed lame. Over all, the movie was okay for me, but I do wish poor little Dakota didn't have to screem so much.

I did like the part where the dad and son where playing catch in the back yard and the kid throws the ball through the window, man there are days when I'd like to be able to get away with that.

LOL. It is even funnier on Scary Movie 4. He throws the ball really hard and it hits a woman.LOL

well the movies quite good
Guess I'll chime in......................The first movie was better,I thought. The second movie had good special effects and was still entertaining in spite of Tom Cruise and it's plot holes....Both films are weak compared to the book, but isn't that usually the case??
I gotta say.....I'm a fan of the old sci-fi from the 1950s and 60s...Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Earth vs The Flying Saucers etc......cheesy, but classic!!
Oh, and Fiend Without A Face....giant flying brains that attack people?? Sound FAMILIAR????? Go classics!!!
I forgot to say......some day you all might have to convince someone that many years ago, there was a show called "Futurama" and you'll have to explain yourself!!!
HAR!

Said the person who doesn't like to read.

What makes you say i don't like to read?
I don't think a true reader would prefer the movie version.
But I've become the same way over he years.

A book will never be as good as a film.
I have to disagree with that, especially when it comes to films which are adaptations of books... If you do a film there will always be something that someone thinks should be different, you'll never be able to get the whole book in, and they always seem to take out important scenes and put in new scenes that don't really fit... Although I do love seeing interpretations of books, I prefer reading them and using my imagination to picture stuff rather than someone else's... Well I'll stop rambling on about that now...

I didn't say i was a massive or 'true' reader did i, i just said that i read and you for some reason, gathered i didn't.
I agree with Paz....but I have come to take up film more in years past. I always read non-fiction anyway, so a film of the subject matter would be......well.....a documentary.
And Smokey....I meant no harm, mate! Just ribbing ya!
