It was pretty tough. The people there had next to nothing, not even really a home to call their own. You can see that those shacks are basically just slapped together of whatever they could find. But we'd visit the people, and they'd send out their kid with their week's wages just to buy us a bottle of Coke. It was surreal.
This is another picture from the same area:

Wow, wicked pictures, I like the Taj Mahal one
You were there as a teachers' aide.....or what?
And, for how long??

I went with an evangelical Christian organization, we spent two months there doing various humanitarian aid projects, and part of it was going to schools in impoverished areas to teach. I taught Math (again, ugh), English, and Reading. I'm not into the religion thing anymore, but I'm really glad I got the opportunity to go and have the experience.

Talking about the religious side of it..Did you come across any animosity towards you...seen as they are mostly Hindu or whatever?

In answer to Gaz's question, it was interesting...the people were quite open to us, we encountered very little hostility at all. The worst, really, came when we were in Ladakh and the Buddhists learned we were there. They sent out a couple people to spy on us. They didn't like us.
And as for Gurman...just keeping things interesting. It was Gort's idea!! Blame him! LOL

Yes.......I will happily take the blame/credit for making the site more fun and exciting by adding galleries. If enough people don't want to see interesting art, places or people......or images of our favorite shows.....let me know.
I'll stop.

This was taken during Budh Purnima, the birth anniversary of Buddha. The Ladakhis are predominantly Buddhist and this was a big festival for them.

Typical for me.

One of my favorite artists is Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who helped found the pre-Raphaelite movement in the 19th century. Here are some of his paintings:
http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54396/beatabeatrix.jpg (http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54396/beatabeatrix.jpg)
http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54397/rossetti1.jpg (http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54397/rossetti1.jpg)
http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54398/sanctgrael.jpg (http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54398/sanctgrael.jpg)
http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54400/Rossetti_Proserpina.gif (http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54400/Rossetti_Proserpina.gif)
Another great pre-Raphaelite was John William Waterhouse. These paintings were inspired by Tennyson's poem The Lady of Shalott:
http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54401/ladyofshallot1.jpg (http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54401/ladyofshallot1.jpg)
http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54402/ladyofshallot2.jpg (http://gallery.myff.org/gallery/54402/ladyofshallot2.jpg)
I've always loved Waterhouse!! A little like Tadema, eh??
Have you heard Loreena McKennits' 'The Lady of Shalot'?
It's freakin' WONDERFUL!!!

07-03-2007, 04:41 PM
As near as I can tell, the lyrics are Tennyson's poem. I wish I could listen to it, but I can't find it on Rhapsody!

M'kay.....so......some of the charges must be yours, eh?? LOL
1B-DI
08-03-2007, 04:25 AM
No, my dad was totally against the idea of my mom getting a credit card in the first place, but Mom plays by her own rules. Now, of course, she's unemployed with a $2000 credit limit, and Dad has a bunch of other expenses to catch up on...so it seems it's fallen to me to pay my mom's bills and ensure they don't end up fighting over money again...
:(
Sounds a little familiar......with my Mom....but it's okay, now. Everything is paid off....but if I don't find work real soon, we'll both be screwed...
Dammit!!!
